Check Out. I highly recommend it! I received a copy of this book from the author as part of her release team and am giving my honest review.
Thank you, Cynthia! Apr 25, Kella rated it really liked it Shelves: Song of Silence deals with some major seasons of life: happiness, depression, loss of jobs, new life, and the list goes on.
While I enjoyed reading this book, I found Lucy to be sort of whiny and disliked how she constantly lashed out at her husband and the people closest to her.
I realize this attitude stemmed from her depression and the drastic upheaval in her life, but I found it quite hard to relate to.
I also really enjoy the secondary characters, Charlie and the kids, who brought around some much-needed comedic relief and I absolutely LOVED how Cynthia wove musical expressions throughout the plot.
You could really feel the musical heartbeat of Song of Silence! I was graciously provided a free hard-copy of this novel from Litfuse in exchange for an honest review.
I was not required to write a positive review and the opinions I have expressed are my own. Jan 29, Tima rated it it was amazing Shelves: christian-fiction.
Charlie and Lucy have a great marriage and amazing kids. Charlie retired from his job early, but Lucy loves her career as a music teacher and plans to engage in her passion indefinitely.
But when the entire music program is cut, Lucy finds herself without a song. She's drifting and Charlie has no idea how to help.
This was a complex book of emotions and insight. The book started out a little slow for me, but it didn't take long before I was immersed in the main character.
Despite the age differen Charlie and Lucy have a great marriage and amazing kids. Despite the age difference there were so many things that I could relate to in the story.
The author did a great job of conveying how Lucy felt. This was way to reconnect emotionally with my own marriage and see how I could make a difference in how I react or respond.
I would highly recommend this book for several reasons - the writing is exceptional, the thoughts on marriage are spot on, it deals with empty nest and depression, the story is also humorous and entertaining.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more by this author. I received this book free of charge from Litfuse Publicity in exchange for my honest review.
Apr 17, Laura rated it liked it. SONG OF SILENCE is Ms Ruchti's latest book. Realistic, at times like this about a school cutting budgets, eliminating music and the arts and the teacher forced into early retirement--whether she wants it or not.
In this case, she did not. And Lucy struggled greatly, falling into depression, despite her wonderfully supportive husband and children.
While impeccably written, timely, and with realistic characters, I found the overall tone depressing for me as a reader. I guess that's a sign the aut SONG OF SILENCE is Ms Ruchti's latest book.
I guess that's a sign the author did a fantastic job conveying the emotions if she depresses the reader, but most people myself included we don't read to get depressed.
Life does a good enough job on it's own. Thank you very much. I have read all of Cynthia's books so far and loved most of them with the exception of one and now this one is joining that one.
Not my favorite. That said, Ms. Ruchti is an extremely talented author and I applaud her for tackling this tough topic and writing it with such style.
Jul 03, Barbara rated it it was amazing. This was storytelling at it's best. I wondered if the author had been a fly on the wall at my house. It is a story of a long-lasting marriage and adult-children needing to move back home for a time.
Cynthia Ruchti dealt with issues like working through things that irritate you after decades of marriage, depression, loss, challenges and many real-life issues.
It is not a lighthearted romance- in fact it has little to do with romance and much to do with love and change. This is my third book by th This was storytelling at it's best.
This is my third book by this author and I so enjoy her non-fluff stories. Yet, there is humor tucked in with reality, and love and faith woven throughout.
This was a five star out of the ballpark winner for me! Thanks Cynthis Ruchti- write-on! Feb 25, Honeybee rated it really liked it Shelves: christian.
This was a delightful book. The image on the front cover doesn't begin to capture what is nestled in its pages! It is something of a female version of the movie, Mr.
Holland's Opus--only richer. Song of Silence was a little slow-going at first. The main character, Lucy, was "riffed" from her decades-long music teaching job--what we used to call "down-sizing"--something that happens way too often nowadays.
Being middle-aged and having dedicated her life to sharing her love of vocal and instrumenta This was a delightful book. Being middle-aged and having dedicated her life to sharing her love of vocal and instrumental music to others, Lucy was understandably lost after being abruptly terminated due to budget constraints.
She rapidly fell into a depression and required counseling to find her way out. I didn't like Lucy's mia culpa personality, or her criticism of her husband in the early chapters of the novel.
Charlie was sweet, but frequently clueless. This couple is a classic example of two opposites trying to communicate through different love languages.
Charlie's seems to be "quality time," while Lucy's is probably "acts of service. Lucy goes from despondency over the loss of her "passion" to joyful anticipation of exciting possibilities with the rest of her life.
Charlie goes from bumbling buffoon to middle-aged prince charming. Author Cynthia Ruchti created some very believable characters, each one delightful in his or her own way.
The ladies of the HHATT Club are a riot! Great idea for a support group. Lucy's doctor is brilliant.
I love the way she helped her patient by being honest and getting Lucy to be honest with herself. Her assignments are insightful and effective.
Sasha and Evan are endearing, and the way the family responds to them is priceless. The "bi-lingual" wedding was beautifully described.
The author handles these characters with the sensitivity and detail of someone who has done her homework or has personal experience with deaf and autistic persons.
Besides the outstanding character development, the author incorporates several beautiful motifs of expression that are woven like colorful threads in a tapestry, or themes in a musical selection.
First, Ruchti's use of music terminology throughout the book helps us see how much music is a part of who Lucy is.
It's almost like a second language. Through it, she connected with Evan, who had Asperger's syndrome, and touched the hearts of several others.
ASL is another language woven through the second half of the book. That's how the family talks to Sasha, but it is also how Lucy learns to express the music in her heart, when her voice is silenced.
Charlie's language is his supportive presence. Cynthia Ruchti is an excellent writer, and seems to have an outstanding editorial team.
In the entire Advance Reader's copy I read, there was only one little grammatical faux pas within its plus pages.
It is refreshing to find an author who writes with such insight for mature audiences. Anyone over forty should identify with the main characters.
And anyone younger will still find a great story within its pages--maybe even gaining a glimpse into what lies ahead and how to navigate the future with grace.
I heartily recommend this book that sings, rather than shouts, its message of enduring love and faith. Apr 20, Kathleen Kat Smith rated it it was amazing Shelves: chick-literature , contemporary-fiction , christian-fiction , inspirational-fiction.
We wait. We listen. No movement. No stirring. No signs of hope or relief. In the silence, it's tempting to believe nothing is happening.
Good musicians understand the crucial role silence plays in music. The pause creates tension. They give weight to what is about to come or what has just passes.
These silences are not empty, dead space. They're the crucial, fertile silences that make a song what it is.
Mus "There are moments in life, seasons in life, when it seems that God goes silent. Musically speaking, in the silence, something is happening.
In the silence, a song is brewing. Even now, in the quiet pause, in the desperate waiting between what was and what is to come, a song is being composed.
You are becoming, and this becoming is not empty and passive. It's active, fertile and alive no matter how hidden it may seem to your ears.
Wherever you find yourself waiting Keep becoming. Keep hoping and listening. Somewhere beneath the silence that is your life, a faint chord is striking, a song is brewing.
Such profound advice for retired music teacher Lucy Tuttle who finds herself afloat in her life without a sure way to figure out what is next. Being forced into early retirement when the school board votes to eliminate the music program, she feels like she has no voice.
No song left to sing. Her husband Charlie, who has been retired is looking forward to this chapter of their life where he has hopes of spending it with Lucy.
Lucy realizes how much this early retirement will cut into their finances and can't seem to get her head above water long enough to figure out what she is going to do.
Her daughter Olivia, needs to move home temporarily while she finishes up school and at the same time, her son, Sam, just announces that he is getting married to someone who he has barely known at all.
Along with that relationship comes the fact of dealing with Sasha who is deaf and her son Evan who has Asperger's.
Just how much more can one woman be expected to deal with at this stage in her life when age seems to play an imminent role in her finding another teaching position.
Yet the implication as presented is that these people are not cognizant that such an effect even exists. In other words, a form of media which may have been deemed as propagating introversive behavior back in those days was the television.
And that idea could very much be based on individuals being enraptured by a television set. And as we all know, behaving in a such a manner tends to minimize interpersonal communication.
Ultimately as touched upon earlier, this song is not a critique of introversive behavior in and of itself. Rather what it is ultimately dealing with is how the people prefer this manner of living.
And as such, the vocalists and likeminded people are basically regulated to keeping their prophecies on the downlow. February 21, The Guardian.
